چکیده

Research on the reciprocal influence of spatial thinking and GIScience training is limited (Wakabayashi & Ishikawa, 2011). In the current project, we examine improvement in spatial navigation in undergraduates enrolled in GIS classes over the course of a semester. Students enrolled in strategic communications (SC), a low-spatial content class, were used as a control group. Fifty students were trained and tested at 2 time points – beginning and end of a semester – in a virtual navigation task (Silcton; Weisberg, et. al., 2014). We hypothesize that a significantly higher number of GIS students as compared to SC students will be Integrators i.e. they will find the most targets within-route and between-route in the virtual environment. Furthermore, we hypothesize that GIS students will show a significantly greater improvement at time point 2 as compared to SC students. This research has important implications for spatial training and educational pedagogy in STEM disciplines.

Walk and Learn: An Empirical Framework for Assessing Spatial Knowledge Acquisition during Mobile Map Use

We gladly use automated technology (e.g., smart devices) to extend our hard working minds. But what if such technology turns into mind crutches we cannot do without? Understanding how varying levels of automation in mobile maps might impact navigation performance and spatial knowledge acquisition will provide important insights for the ongoing debate on the potentially detrimental effects of us...

Does whole body exposure to GSM-950 MHz electromagnetic fields affect acquisition and consolidation of spatial information in rats?

Background: This study was planned to examine the effects of whole-body exposure to GSM-950 MHz electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on acquisition and consolidation of spatial memory in rats using a water maze task. Materials and Methods: In experiment 1, the animals were given two blocks of five trials per day for three consecutive days in a water maze task. The interval between blocks was 4h...

Qualitative Spatial Representation and Reasoning

The need for spatial representations and spatial reasoning is ubiquitous in AI – from robot planning and navigation, to interpreting visual inputs, to understanding natural language – in all these cases the need to represent and reason about spatial aspects of the world is of key importance. Related fields of research, such as geographic information science (GIScience) [71], have also driven th...

Spatial navigation training protects the hippocampus against age-related changes during early and late adulthood

It is unknown whether lifestyle, including mental stimulation, and appropriate training interventions, may directly improve spatial navigation performance and its underlying neural substrates. Here we report that healthy younger and older men performing a cognitively demanding spatial navigation task every other day over 4 months display navigation-related gains in performance and stable hippoc...
